Ramadan Kareem
As the new crescent moon ushers in Ramadan, the President extends his best wishes to Muslim communities in the United States and around the world.
Each Ramadan, the ninth month on the lunar calendar, Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset for 29 or 30 days. Fasting is a tradition in many religious faiths and is meant to increase spirituality, discipline, thankfulness, and consciousness of God's mercy. Ramadan is also a time of giving and reaching out to those less fortunate, and this summer, American Muslims have joined their fellow citizens in serving communities across the country. Over the course of the month, we will highlight the perspectives of various faiths on fasting and profile faith-based organizations making real impacts in American cities and towns.

President Obama's 4th of July Message
Today, we are called upon to remember not only the day our country was born, but also the indomitable spirit of the first American citizens who made that day possible. We are called to remember how unlikely it was that our American experiment would succeed at all; that a small band of patriots would declare independence from a powerful empire; and that they would form, in the new world, what the old world had never known - a government of, by, and for the people. Remarks at the 100th Anniversary of the Boundary Waters Treaty - Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Good morning. What a glorious day, and it’s an absolute delight for me to be here on this occasion. I take any excuse I can to get back to come back to New York, and to celebrate this commemoration with all of you and to have an opportunity to spend time with my Canadian counterpart, Minister Cannon, is indeed a privilege.
I just want to recognize the significance of this extraordinary moment in time. The friendship between the people of the United States and Canada is the strongest in the world. There is no border that is longer and more peaceful; there is no greater trade between two nations. There are so many values that we share in common, and today we celebrate a treaty that helped to make this friendship possible 100 years ago.

Consul General Toronto John R. Nay presented books to the F.W. Begley School in Windsor, Ontario.
On November 13, U.S. Consul General Toronto John R. Nay presented a collection of primary and middle school books to the F.W. Begley School in Windsor, Ontario. Portions of the collection, which includes more than 250 titles that highlight American history, multiculturalism, and aspects of shared Canadian and U.S. history such as the Underground Railroad, will be made available to schools throughout the Essex-Windsor School Board area. In his remarks, C.G. Nay stated that the idea of spreading the message of freedom and human rights values through literature dates back decades. A notable example was the American library in Soweto, South Africa, which brought literature and educational materials to young people living under a government intent on keeping them illiterate. Now, many U.S. Embassies and Consulates around the world participate in similar public outreach programs to contribute to mutual understanding between our peoples.
